If you are, do you know why? What causes you to be excited? I know what causes me to be excited about photography.

Sometimes I am as excited as a little kid on Hari Raya. This excitement comes for me from knowing that each photograph is a journey, sometimes even a long journey, where the destination is unknown.

Even when I set out with a certain photo in mind, the end result is unsure. The whole process revolves around hope. There’s the hope of getting a great subject in great light in a way that’s compelling, moving and meaningful. There’s the hope that I’ll see what I need to see in order to make one more important image. There’s the hope that I’ll be around long enough to share it with others.

That hope – that belief that something positive will come out of the journey — is what keeps me excited about photography.

Rejoice in this time of new beginnings. It’s time for yet another journey with our cameras and lenses. It’s time for a journey who’s conclusion is uncertain. Isn’t that exciting?
